£3,000 damage claim after showroom raid

From the Wirral Globe, first published Wednesday 3rd Feb 1999.

THREE young men made off over a wall onto a railway embankment with armsful of clothing after a raid on a newly opened Birkenhead showroom.

One was caught after a chase on foot and the other two were found hiding by a police dog, prosecutor Gill Harris told Wirral magistrates.

She said the three had earlier been seen running at and kicking the window at Cosalt Outdoor at the Lairdside Technology Park before they smashed it with a brick.

She claimed over £3,000 in compensation for damage to some of the clothing, the window and an inflatable craft which was on display.

Alan Maddocks, aged 21, of Woodchurch Road; Scott Ashcroft, 20, of Willowbank Road; and Mark Ian Bradley, 20, of Mallory Road, all Birkenhead, admitted burglary and theft of jackets worth £2,594.

Julian Linskill, defending, said the three were lucky not to have been gravely injured through their action. He said all three were drunk at the time and it was not known who suggested the venture.

Maddocks was put on probation for 18 months and the other two for 12 months. They each had to pay £250 towards compensation and £50 costs.
