Peter strikes gold at special Olympics - and Victoria hurdles to national title

From the Wirral Globe, first published Tuesday 19th Jul 2005.

TWO young athletes have added still further to Wirral's ever-growing list of achievements in the world of sport.

The latest triumphs have come via tennis ace Peter Millar (right) and 17-year-old hurdler Victoria Garrad (left).

Peter, who lives in Birkenhead, struck gold at the Special Olympics staged in Glasgow by winning the Division Two Men's Singles Tennis Championship.

Peter, who was representing the North West, attends Wallasey Manor LTC, where he is coached by Leigh Owen. He received some financial help from 'Merseysidesport', his colleagues at Wirral Athletic Club, where he trains, and also friends and neighbours.

Victoria, meanwhile, was taking part in the National English Schools' Championships - and came away a national champion by hurtling to victory in the 100 metres hurdles.

Victoria, who lives in Spital, is a pupil at Wirral Girls' Grammar School, Bebington, and trains at the nearby Oval in Old Chester Road.

She hopes to carry on with her sport when she goes to university next year.
