Fell runner Jonny aims for glory

TOP Wirral athlete Jonny Mellor flies to New Zealand this weekend as part of the England team taking part in the World Fell Running Championships.

Eighteen-year-old Jonny, who lives in Irby and trains on the hilly terrain of Moel Fammau, North Wales, is also an accomplished competitor on the running track.

Last weekend, he represented his club, Liverpool Harriers, in the 3,000 metres and 1,500 metres events at the National Junior League Finals in Derby - and won them both. The Harriers took third place overall.

Jonny, who works at a local supermarket prior to going to college next year, is ranked among the top five of the UK athletes at Under-20 level - he is rated No 1 in the 3K Under-20 national rankings and the 5K Under-20 road events.

A former member of Wirral Athletic Club, he has won numerous trophies for track. road and fell running.

His ambition is to be selected to represent Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games hosted by London.
